Zbog bombardovanja Srbije, Matić nije želeo da nosi cvet maka, što je potom detaljno obrazložio i podsetivši se dana u Srbiji 1999. kada je bio dečak.

U derbiju protiv Mančester sitija, kada je još svečanije odata počast nastradalima, Matić je samo mirno u centru kruga stadiona ukazao poštovanje, zagrljen sa saigračima, ali cveta maka nije bilo, što je izazvalo lavinu komentara na Tviteru.

Inače, Matić nije bio jedini jer je Irac Džejms Meklin odbio da nosi cvet maka, a jedan engleski novinar stao je u odbranu Nemanje Matića zbog velike lavine uvreda.
