S obzirom da su galerije i drugi izložbeni prostori bili zatvoreni dva meseca (a ponegde još uvek ne rade), umetnici širom sveta tražili su načine da ostanu u poslu. Neki od njih pronašli su ga u pošti.

Mejla-art ili poštanska umetnost bila je veliki hit tokom 1960-ih godina, da bi potom polako zamirala. Njena svrha bila je jasna - umetnici, putem pošte, mogli su da komuniciraju na daljinu sa kolegama, publikom, kritičarima... Mešavina literature i likovne umetnosti na poštanskim markama, kovertama, markicama najednom je, u doba korone, postala ponovo popularna. Ljudima je prosto bilo potrebno da pronađu vezu jedni između drugih, a koja se ne ostvaruje posredstvom ekrana.

Brojne kampanje, poput one koju je pokrenuo Džejson Braun, umetnik iz Nešvila, sadrže poziv umetnicima da stvaraju i šalju svoje radove. Poštansku umetnost moguće je i primiti, te je tako "Civilization", magazin koji je stvoren isklučivo od razgovora koje njegovi novinari čuju na ulicama Njujorka, ponudio da vam pošalje mejl-art za tri dolara.

- Ovo je savršeno vreme za mejl-art - smatra Džejson Piklman, umetnik i dizajner koji vodi malu galeriju u Čikagu. On trenutno sakuplja koverte, a nada se da će uskoro od njih napraviti mejl-art izložbu, treću po redu u svojoj galeriji.

Iako se koreni ove umetnosti mogu naći u raznim modernisitičkim i postmodernističkim pokretima, njenim pionirom smatra se Rej Džonson. On je svoje prve pokušaju počeo još 1943. godine. Džonson, koji je nazvan "najpoznatijim njujorškim anonimnim umetnikom", počeo je da svojim prijateljima šalje umetnička pisma sastavljena od slika iz magazina, novina, i drugih izvora. Nazvao ih je "motiko". Nekada su stizali i sa pozivom primaocu da sam doda nešto umetnosti, a onda prosledi dalje.

Ideja mu je bila da zaobiđe institucije i uvede više demokratije u umetnički svet. Svako je mogao (i i dalje može) postati mejl-umetnik i deo ove mreže. Nakon uspeha tokom 1960-ih godina, mejl-art je polako zamirao, da bi ga pred kraj veka potpuno zamenile digitalne forme.

Sasvim neočekivano, tokom epidemije korone je, makar i na kratko, doživeo svoju renesansu.

🌏💖 Happy Earth Day! 💖🌏 Using vintage stamps counts as recycling, right? 😅 . I remember bringing my own produce bags to a grocery store about 11 or 12 years ago and getting the WEIRDEST looks from both the cashiers and other customers 🤔 It was a little embarrassing to have to explain myself honestly, but that didn't stop me from doing it! And I’m glad because now it's pretty normal to see people bringing their own reusable bags so WOOHOO! 🎉 . Since people have been locked down and staying home, I've noticed a lot more animal activity in my neighborhood. The birds are signing louder, more squirrels are scrambling around in trees and in the streets and I've even seen a coyote! 🐦🌳🐿🐝🐕🌻 Not to mention a TON more families walking and biking together every day 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 And our air quality has been soooo much better without all those cars on the streets. . It sucks that it took a deadly pandemic for people to slow down and be kinder to the earth, but I'm just going to cherish this unexpected side effect for as long as it lasts. I hope that once the stay-at-home orders are lifted that people remember it wasn't so hard or even that weird to be kind to Mother Earth.
