Kraljica Elizabeta II ima 91 godinu i nalazi se na britanskom tronu od 1952. godine, što je čini vladarom sa najdužim stažom na svetu - čak 65 godina. U poređenju s njom, trenutna kraljica Butana, Džetsun Pema ima 27 godina.

Na vlast je došla 2011. godine kada se udala za kralja Butana, Džigme Hamgiela Vangčaka, kojem su dali nadimak "Kralj zmajeva". On se zabavljao sa rođakom sadašnje supruge dok je studirao na Oksfordu, ali o tome nije bilo priče u medijima i mogućim problemima koji su zbog toga se pojavili.

 

6 November 2017, Thimphu: Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen graced a celebration to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol- a United Nations treaty to take steps to protect the ozone layer. Dignitaries and senior officials from the government, UN and private sector also attended the event, which organized by National Environment Commission (NEC). The Montreal Protocol has been the most successful environment treaty of the United Nations, and the only one to receive universal endorsement- where 197 member states unanimously came together to phasing out chemicals that were damaging the Ozone Layer. As a result, more than 99 percent of nearly 100 ozone-depleting chemicals have been phased out, and this has also significantly contributed to climate change mitigation. Protecting the Ozone Layer remains an important endeavor, and these efforts have been bolstered by Her Majesty’s support as the UNEP Ozone Ambassador. The lesson from the success Protocol is being used in efforts to achieve similar collective action for climate change today. A Coffee Table book on 25 Years of Partnership for Environment Conservation, documenting the achievements of the last 25 years, was launched during the event. Refrigeration and Air Condition equipment (RAC) was also handed over to Ministry of Labour and Human Resources to assist the RAC curriculum. In commemoration of the anniversary, the Motithang Park in Thimphu was declared an ‘Ozone Park’. Džetsun je očarala stanovnike ove male držve svojom lepotom i skromnošću, jer sa mužem živi u skromnoj kućici, a posle kraljevskog venčanja nije otišla na medeni mesec, nego je pešačila Butanom i upoznavala podanike.

Studije međunarodnih odnosa i psihologije je završila u Velikoj Britaniji. Verila se za kralja kada je imala samo 21 godinu i time izazvala brojne polemike, budući da je mladi par prekršio protokol i odbacio tradiciju ugovorenih brakova.

10 August 2016, Bumthang: His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen presented His Royal Highness The Gyalsey to the people of Chumey today. Upon arriving at the ancient maternal home of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, His Royal Highness was received in a traditionl ceremony in honour of HRH's first visit. The community, represented by local leaders, students, religious bodies, and the people, gathered in thousands to offer tshogchang, and celebrate the joy-filled occasion.
