A terrible fire that affected the village of Mati took at least 50 lives and more than 100 people were injured. This village is located 29 kilometers east of Athens.
Terrible news quickly traveled around the world and the internet became full with the scenes of horror - terrifying footages of frightened people, destroyed cars, burned buildings, and even burned bodies.
According to Reuters, this is the worst fire in Greece since the one in Peloponnese in 2007.
- At this moment, more than 600 men and women of the fire brigades are at the scene, as well as more than 300 vehicles - Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said last night.
He urged citizens to join the rescuers in order to achieve the best results.
Mati is in the region Rafina and it is very popular among the local tourists, first of all among retired people and children who come here to camp.
Around 100 houses and 200 vehicles burned in the fire.

689 people were successfully evacuated who were trapped in the Rafina port.
Rescuers found a group of ten Danish tourists who had escaped from a fire late in the night and sailed away to the unknown.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic expressed his deepest condolences to the President and Prime Minister of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos and Alexis Tsipras, and offered Serbian help to overcome the flames.
26 charred bodies were found near the coast, it is suspected that people escaped the fire by running to the water, but the smoke and the flames caught up to them and they couldn't rescue themselves.
- The bodies were found on the coast, 15 meters from the sea. The police forces blocked the area. These people probably tried to escape to the sea, but the fire blocked them - the photographer of the agency ANA said.
This fire threatens to jeopardize traffic because it is located near the highway, which is why the Athens-Corinth road is closed, one of two paths to Peloponnese, and rail traffic is also interrupted.
