Croatia will experience Greek scenario: "Serbia will be better than us soon"

Today, Croatian GDP per capita, viewed by purchasing power, is also the second, but the most unsuccessful in the EU

In the 25 years since independence, the second most developed post-communist country has become the second most unsuccessful, behind Bulgaria, Croatian scientist Boris Podobnik warns. He adds that Serbia will soon overtake Croatia.

Since that trend continues, Croatia could soon experience so-called Greek scenario, he warns.

Podobnik, a physicist with 3,000 citations in world magazines, points out that Croatia at the beginning of the 1990s, according to the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, was the second most developed country among the former socialist countries.

Today, Croatian GDP per capita, viewed by purchasing power, is also the second, but the most unsuccessful in the EU.

- Only Bulgaria is behind us but, as it is changing faster than we do, we won't be second to worst much longer. We will be the worst. This decline in terms of GDP is definitely the best indicator of lagging behind - predicts Podobnik.

Croatia is not ready for changes, he thinks.

- If we develop two percent annually, and our competition, let's say Serbia, three percent, we are falling behind in relation to Serbia - estimates Podobnik.

He points out that changes are needed, first and foremost, in the public and state sectors - and if the majority is not ready for that, then the someone other will rule over Croats, as well as centuries before.

- We will not control our destiny because almost everything in Croatia will become German, Italian, Austrian or Hungarian, as it has been until about a hundred years ago - warns Podobnik for portal Index.

He says that Croatian society must change.

- The slower we change, and the more we are in debt, the sooner we will go bankrupt, and then all of ours will become their (foreign) - Podobnik said.
