"I set Brgud on fire because Serbs live there!" Two girls in Croatia arrested, they set up fires out of revenge?!
The fire that has been swallowing the entire Benkovac area since August 20th is still tirelessly roaring and Zadar police arrested two girls aged 21 and 25 in the village Brgud, dozen kilometers from Benkovac, which mostly has Serbian population. One of the two young pyromaniacs confessed setting up the fire, giving the motive as well, as Jutarnji List unofficially finds out.
- I have been revolted against Serbs since the Homeland War. My home was burnt down then. My family was left without anything - the young woman told the police, giving them the reason for the vengeance that caused great material damage, and why Brgud's residents have been living on the verge of fear since then, writes jutarnji.hr.
Given the confession of the pyromaniac, she and her assistant will be criminally responsible for setting up the fire, bringing property and lives in danger, and they are looking up to five years in prison. It remains unknown, however, why they chose Brgud as a vengeance location, that is, whether they lived in that area during the war times.
Brgud's residents are disgusted. They sharply condemn any violence as they keep looking at the crops being destroyed by the relentless fire, and which are the only source of income with domestic animals they care about.
- There are 15 people left in the village. It has been like that for years. We are trying to survive, forgotten from everybody. There, the fire is now going. It will go towards the houses again if the wind turns. The fire was literally under my window on Monday. Sheep remained on the hill and I couldn't get them down because the fire rushed to the village. And those two arrested girls, they don't live here anymore, as I heard - said a local.
- Only a few young people are in the village, the rest are middle aged people and older. Many houses have been empty since the war. Some were sold, and someone didn't rebuild. Everyone stays away from the village because there is no perspective there. The fire looks terrible on the television, it is an entirely different story live. An incredible wonder! I was in Kozlovac yesterday. Some houses burnt there. Desperate people are sitting in the ashes - said one of the locals.
