Record numbers of Serbian water polo players are shaking the world: Dolphins are ready for a new record in the history of water polo!
The current rulers of the world and Europe are chasing for their 10th title in the last 10 competitions
The national team of Serbia in water polo is a fantastic series in big competitions, rarely recorded in the history of sports.
At the last nine major competitions (four world leagues, two European championships, one World Cup, World Championships and the Olympics), our water polo players have won the same number of gold medals.
If they triumph at this competition, it will be a historic result that one team has defended the world throne, and at the same time, it has reached to 10 gold medals from 10 competitions.
It is interesting that Budapest is the host of the World Championships for the first time. However, the capital of Hungary has brought luck to our water polo players in the past. Our national team reached a gold medal in Budapest in European championships in 2001 and 2014, and on World Cup in 2006.
Here are some interesting numbers related to the Serbian water polo team.
1. Retired national player Slobodan Nikic has the most trophies in the water polo world. He is also the only player to have won three gold medals from three world championships. In Montreal 2005, Rome 2009, and Kazanja 2015. Most of our players have two titles, from Milanovic and Vasovic who dominated in 1986 and 1991, Vanja Udovicic 2005 and 2009 and Aleksic, Filipovic, Gocic, Stefan Mitrovic, Dusko and Gojko Pjetlovic and Prlainovic who have the shiniest medals from 2009 and 2015.
2. It is interesting that Filipovic and Prlainovic are participating for the sixth time on World Championship, for the fifth time G. Pijetlovic, D. Pijetlovic, S. Mitrovic and Aleksic, the fourth time for Cuk, third for Mandic and B. Mitrovic, second for Jaksic and Randjelovic, while the debutants are Rasovic and Ubovic.
3. It is interesting that Savic is the only coach among the 16 national teams in Budapest who won the title of the champion as well as the player and as a coach. Savic will sit on the bench as a coach for the third time on World Championship. He was seventh in Barcelona, and first in Kazan. As a player, he participated in four planetary championships. In Montreal 2005 gold, Fukuoka 2001 silver, Barcelona 2003 bronze, and Melbourne 2007 fourth place.
4. Aleksandar Sapic was the best scorer of the champions four times, and Serbia can boast that it had the best player of the championship four times in this century. Those were Sapic 2005, Udovicic 2009, Filipovic 2011, D. Pijetlovic 2015. Bane Mitrovic and Prlainovic received a recognition in 2015 as the best goalkeeper and player of the final day.
