Man from Belgrade who wrote first SF drama in the word, brother of our famous artist (PHOTO)

Dragutin J. Ilic, Serbian writer, playwright, journalist and politician, born on 14 February 1858 in Belgrade. He came from a well known family Ilic: His father was Jovan Ilic, his brother Vojislav Ilic. He starter writing since his high school days, cooperating with "Javor" and "Otadzbina" magazines.

He showed most interest in writing poetry and drama.

The National Theatre in Belgrade on March 1, 1881, performed his play "Vukasin". He also wrote poems, novels, short stories, travelogues and theater criticism.

He wrote 13 plays, mostly featuring the transience of life and tragedy. However, this man from Belgrade will leave his mark in worldwide dramaturgy given the fact that in 1889 he wrote the first science-fiction drama in the world - "After a million years." 

Jovan Skerlic did not include him in his history of new Serbian literature and that largely influenced in his withdrawal from public literature. Towards the end of life Ilic completely regressed, spending turbulent life and denying the group gathered around the Serbian Literary Gazette, which added to the early literary oblivion.

In 1901, he started the list Orthodox East in Bucharest which was published in Russian and French, and was dedicated to the Russian audience for notification of failures of Russian policy in the Balkans. List it was soon banned, but Ilic returned to Serbia and started literary work again.

During the World War I he went to Russia where he lead the propaganda about Serbian fighting and he gathered Yugoslav volunteers. Already forgotten in literary reality, he died in 1926.
