Dacic: Never before were there smoke grenades, tear gas in the Serbian National Assembly...

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs Ivica Dacic said today that in the history of the state of Serbia, incidents involving smoke grandes and tear gas, eggs and bottles hurled in its National Assembly - the violence perpetrated by the opposition parties today  - had never been seen before.

Dacic added that this was a great disgrace for the National Assembly, but also for the whole of Serbia, and that the violence was only a part of a bigger plan to destabilize and destroy Serbia.

"In the history of Serbia, it has never happened that smoke grandes and tear gas, eggs and bottles were used in the National Assembly, in the violence by opposition parties when several deputies (members of the National Assembly) were injured."

This was a disgraceful episode for the institution of the National Assembly, but also for the whole of Serbia. The violence perpetrated by the opposition, which we all witnessed today in the Serbian parliament, is only part of a wider plan to destabilize and destroy Serbia, he said.

"And it comes from those who call for democracy and the dignity and efficiency of institutions. Should violence and savagery be an example for a democratic model of behavior and values the country is guide by? No, gentlemen, such incidents disrupt democratic processes, disrupt the work of institutions and create tension among citizens," Dacic stated, and added:

"All those who participated in the incident that occurred during the First Spring Regular Session of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia will be held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law. We will never tolerate violence, and each individual must understand the gravity of their actions and the consequences those carry.

There is no immunity that will protect anyone from liability for this kind of behavior. Anyone who tries to destabilize and humiliate the institution that is the highest body of legislative power and is called the National Assembly, is in fact destroying and humiliating their own people."
