Prosecutor: Former Belgrade City official Nemanja Stajic's family illegally acquired huge property

A series of arrests took place today as part of a major operation carried out by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office and the police to combat corruption and illegal construction.

The chief public prosecutor from the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, Nenad Stefanovic, spoke about this in detail.

"We've arrested a total of eight people today. These results were achieved through an investigation into the activities of the suspect Nemanja Stajic and his relatives. The investigation was launched in October 2022 and is still ongoing. It was established that the persons could not have acquired the property (they own) using their legal income," stressed Stefanovic.

They acquired illegal gains worth 6,500,000 euros, Stefanovic added.

"Novak S., the brother of Nemanja S., is accused of concluding contracts for the purchase and sale of 90 illegal apartments," the prosecutor noted, among other things.

Nemanja Stajic, the former head of the Secretariat for Legalization Affairs in the administration of the City Belgrade was arrested in an operation that is part of a major push against corruption, carried out by the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia (MUP).

Stajic us suspected of approving the legalization of a number of illegally built buildings. In addition to him, his brother Novak was also detained, as well as Jovan Kovacevic, who is in charge of the municipality of Vracar in the city Secretariat for Legalization Affairs.
