"Meter-long icicles, and we pray that our cars start": "Siberian morning" on Serbia's Pester Plateau!

An icy morning dawned in Sjenica, which many refer to as "the Serbian Siberia."
It was minus 22 degrees Celsius in the early morning hours today in this area in the southwest of the country, although according to the locals, the subjective feeling was that it was even colder.

"It's one those mornings when your breath literally freezes, but we're used to it. This is nothing unusual for Sjenica. We dress warmly and hope that the car will start. Although, when the temperatures are this low, we try to use cars as little as possible so they don't break down," one local resident told RINA, smiling.

The coldest point on the Pester Plateau is certainly the village of Karajukica Bunari, and even more extremely low temperatures were recorded here in earlier years. Specifically, in 2006, a record-breaking minus 39.5 degrees was measured.

Locals put on thick jackets, warm shoes and pull scarves over their mouths just to walk a few meters from their doorstep to the barn.
"Icicles from the roof here can form almost a meter long. But this is all normal because winters in Karajukica Bunari and the surrounding villages used to be even harsher. Locals use wood burning stoves for heating, the fire is kept going all day and you leave the house only when you have to. Over 20 cubic meters of firewood is used up here (by each household) during the winter," said Sabahudin Abdagic.
