President Vucic address nation in video message

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic posted on his Instagram account and sent a message to the citizens of Serbia.

The president said that he wanted to thank everyone who participated in the protests on Saturday and Sunday, but also the huge number of citizens who disagree with those protests.

"And who calmly, patiently waited for the end of the demonstrations. It is a very important lesson for all of us. Important, because we preserved peace, stability and hope for the future," the president said in a video posted on Instagram.

He added that it is important that talks with teachers, representatives of the university, start as soon as possible.

"So that no one avoids their responsibility. So that they understand well that conversation is healing and that a solution can only be reached through conversation," said Vucic.

He also said that he wants to thank people throughout Serbia.

"Those ordinary people, who send words of support. When I say words of support, not to me personally, but above all to the state of Serbia, concerned about the situation in the country, with the desire that many things will change for the better in the future," said Vucic.

"I said this also because I will be an unwavering critic of all those who think that a circus-like atmosphere is the right way to honor the dead, the victims of the (railway) tragedy in Novi Sad. I believe that showing empathy, supporting and helping the families is the best way to do that, and I can only distance myself from everything else we can see and say that has nothing to do with us," said the president of Serbia.

Vucic also said that he is "absolutely unwavering in his judgment that Serbia can and must get only a Serbian government."

"If that is possible at all. If not, then it's time for new elections. We do not need governments imposed from the outside and governments imposed without elections and without the will of the people. And I will remain firm, I will remain strong because of you, citizens of Serbia, because you elected me and I will never give up on a successful and progressive Serbia," said the president.
