Vucic: Breaking into Matica Srpska was attack on Serbian institutions, we will announce important news today
President Aleksandar Vucic said today that attempts to continue attacks on Serbian institutions are behind protesting students bursting into the building of Matica Srpska.
Matica Srpska is the oldest Serbian cultural and scientific institution, located in Novi Sad.
Vucic said that the state will strongly oppose such behavior, and announced that in the afternoon hours, he will have important news for the citizens of Serbia.
He also said that things in Serbia can only be changed through democratic means.
In a video address via his Instagram account, "buducnostsrbijeav", Vucic said that last night "some people" interrupted the St. Sava Academy at Matica Srpska, stating that this had never happened before in our country.
"Some people thought they had the right to destroy our history, tradition, and culture. It is up to us to respond to that with peace, patience and a serious approach, to educate and change ourselves and our children in a different way, and for this to never again happen to us," Vucic stressed.
He assessed that attempts to continue to attack Serbian institutions, especially in the north of Serbia, are behind the incident.
"We will strongly and fiercely oppose that. We will oppose it using all permitted and democratic political means. It is important for us to show our stance towards political opponents in a peaceful and tolerant way, to preserve stability and show respect toward those who think differently," Vucic said.
He added that it is good that all the Belgrade city and state services prepared for today's unlawful gathering and unlawful blockade of Autokomanda neighborhood in the capital.
Vucic stated that it is very important that there are enough toilets, firefighters, ambulances and for the police not to allow any incident, especially involving traffic.
"It seems to me that it has never been more important to preserve peace, stability and to look to the future. And we will succeed in that. Already this week we will open new sections of highways. This week already we will show how Serbia is progressing. And we just have to urge all citizens to be peaceful, respect diverse opinion, and we will solve problems democratically and in democratic institutions. So that the case of Matica Srpska and the St. Sava Academy would never happen again," Vucic stressed.
"Happy Savindan (St. Sava Day, Jan. 27), stay with us in the afternoon, we will announce important news to the citizens of Serbia," concluded Vucic.
