Eight people die in nursing home fire near Barajevo: Minister Starovic speaks

Eight people died and seven were injured in a fire that broke out this morning around 3:30 am in a nursing home in Veliki Borak in the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo, RTS has learned.

There are indications that this is a case of arson, said Minister Nemanja Starovic.

Luka Causic, acting head of the Department for Emergency Situations of the Ministry of Interior of Serbia, told RTS that seven people were injured and 13 more rescued from the fire.

He added that, according to the first data they have, there were 30 residents in the home.

He said that those injured were taken over by ambulance crews and transported to the VMA and the Emergency Center.

According to Causic, after receiving a report this morning at 3:32 am, units from the Department for Emergency Situations were immediately sent to the scene and found that the fire was in an advanced stage.
