Brnabic: Proposal for us to host Putin and Trump is only logical, both leaders are popular among Serbians
President of the National Assembly of Serbia Ana Brnabic has commented on President Aleksandar Vucic's proposal for presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump to meet here by saying that it is an interesting offer and that Serbia is the logical place for such a meeting.
"I think it would somehow be, as the president said, a logical place, for Serbia to be that meeting place, because Serbia is the only country on the European continent that has remained neutral and has an independent foreign policy. We are the only country on the the European continent that did not impose sanctions against the Russian Federation. On the other hand, Trump, as a US presidential candidate, enjoyed the greatest support anywhere in the world here, not only from politicians, but from the people," Brnabic told TV Informer.
She recalled that President Vucic in the past rejected proposals for Serbia, as a country that is seen and respected by the freedom-loving world as independent, to interfere in various topics and problems in any way, but that this offer he is making is certainly logical and interesting.
Brnabic stressed that she believes that the topic will be studied in Washington.
"I don't see on what basis Switzerland would offer to be the meeting place for those two leaders. Switzerland is known as a neutral country, but it has imposed sanctions against Russia, it joined the entire package of sanctions against Russia, and that was extremely surprising, and when the war in Ukraine started, Switzerland lost the neutrality it had and seized or froze Russian assets," said Brnabic.
Reminding that Trump will take office on January 20, she pointed out that Serbia does not rely on what might happen and see that as a possible solution to the problem of NIS (Serbian Petroleum Industry) coming under US sanctions, but that instead as serious and responsible politicians, the entire Government, Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic are all working to solve this problem.
Speaking about her visit to Venezuela, where she and a Serbian delegation attended the inauguration of President Nicolas Maduro, she said that people approached her on the street and said that Vucic was their country's friend, because they recognized that he was fighting for a freedom-loving world.
"The influence and reputation of Serbia in the world has changed incredibly in the last 11 years, thanks to President Vucic. Serbia is no longer the same country, Serbia is a country that is respected," Brnabic said.
Touching on the student protests and blockades of faculties, she said that these protests are now petering out.
"It is legitimate for students to think that they should be able to change something in society with their activities, but not by destroying Serbia," the president of the National Assembly concluded.
