Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Djuric said today that by the time US President Donald Trump is inaugurated on January 20, Belgrade will send the name of the next Serbian ambassador to Washington.

"Then, that needs to go through procedures that last from a couple of weeks to a couple of months, but very soon we will have a plenipotentiary ambassador," Djuric told K1 television and added that diplomatic rules dictate that the name of the ambassador should first be communicated to the country where they will serve.

He added that Vlada Maric serves as chargé d'affaires of the Serbian embassy in Washington and is currently acting ambassador, and that there is a team that monitors activities in Congress and the State Department, as well as those of lobbying firms.

Djuric also spoke about the possibility of Donald Trump visiting Serbia:

"Trump is the global leader of our era, a man who changes the world. His return to the helm of the United States of America opens up numerous opportunities, not only for America, but also for the countries that are ready to stand behind similar principles in the international arena - the principles of statehood, equal relationship and mutual respect.

Serbs living in the US have overwhelmingly supported Trump. According to public opinion polls just before the November election, Serbs were (also) the most pro-Trump nation in Europe. We recognize the values of his policies and clearly remember the experiences with the policies of some other options, which we fought against.

Serbia has a strong desire to host US President Donald Trump, and I am convinced that this visit would have historical significance. President Trump would be welcomed in Belgrade like nowhere else. Our president has a personal relationship with President Trump. I had the honor of attending the meeting between President Vucic and Trump in 2020.

In that meeting, President Trump expressed his desire to, should he win the election, visit Belgrade. After his victory (in 2024), President Vucic was one of the first world leaders to have a telephone conversation with Trump. That conversation was extremely cordial and we hope to achieve extraordinary cooperation with his administration," said Djuric.
