Vucevic: Quick raising of indictment for Novi Sad railway tragedy confirms no one was obstructing the case
Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said today, commenting on the raising of the indictment against 13 people in connection to the collapse of the Novi Sad railway station canopy, that this happening in a short period of time, in less than two months, confirms that no one was obsturcting the case.
"I believe and hope that the prosecutor prepared and substantiated his indictment well. He did it in a very short period of time, which confirms that no one obstructed the case. I don't know of such a complex case being completed faster, in terms of prosecutor's investigation. It hasn't even been two months, you have an indictment," Vucevic said in response to a journalist, after visiting the reconstructed health center in Zeleznik.
Vucevic recalled that yesterday, based on his experience as a lawyer, he said that he expected the indictments to be filed quickly, because he saw that the prosecution had presented all the evidence it had planned and that it was ready to proceed with the indictment.
He added that it is now up to the court to determine whether the indictment is valid and whether it is based on facts and evidence.
"It will be a difficult court proceeding, but this is a confirmation that no one intends to cover up, hide or obstruct anything," said Vucevic.
He reminded that former Minister of Construction Goran Vesic is among the accused and assessed that nobody is protected.
"The whole nation and the whole state is waiting for an answer, I don't know who is guilty and whether those included in the indictment are guilty, but it is good that the state, the people, the citizens, the nation will get an answer to that question in court. To those who expected the proceedings to be initiated, here is the indictment, in less than two months. For me, as a lawyer, surprisingly quickly," Vucevic said.
When asked how he thinks the indictment will affect student blockades, Vucevic replied that it will have no effect on the protests.
"I think it is clear to the whole state that all the demands have been met. But we have now entered the stage where we don't even know what the demands are... I think we are approaching the moment when you will only see political demands. In the end, everything will come down only to political demands," said Vucevic.
