President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen pointed out last night that during the Hungarian presidency of the Council of the EU, milestones were achieved when it comes to the accession process of Serbia, Albania and Montenegro.

At a press conference in Brussels, after the meeting of the Council, Von der Leyen pointed out numerous achievements during the Hungarian presidency, which, she emphasized, "expanded Europe."

"This week milestones were achieved on the accession path of Montenegro, Albania and Serbia," said Von der Leyen, after Montenegro closed three chapters in the negotiations with the EU, Albania opened another cluster, while the EU approved a letter, inviting Serbia to submit its negotiating positions for chapters 16 and 19, which are part of Cluster 3 on competitiveness and inclusive growth.

Von der Leyen pointed out that the Hungarian presidency of the EU, which is coming to an end, took place during the transition period between two political cycles, which is always challenging.

Among the numerous achievements of the Hungarian presidency, she mentioned that support for Ukraine was improved by the adoption of the 15th package of sanctions and the G7 agreement on the credit framework, and she pointed to the achievement of the ambitious Budapest Declaration.

"We have all signed up to one goal, which is a competitive Europe. The declaration lays out the homework we have to do in order for Europe to remain a major business destination," Von der Leyen said.

She also reminded that during the Hungarian presidency, a "very successful" summit of the European political community was organized, as well as that a "historic decision" was made when it comes to the complete integration of Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area, "where they belong."
