Video of highway horror near Smederevo: Suzuki driving wrong way colliding with everything in its path
The scene of the direct collision, which happened yesterday on the Belgrade-Nis highway when a man was driving a Suzuki wrong-way in the fast lane, was filmed by our reporter who happened at the scene, which you can watch below:
The participants and witnesses in the accident told Telegraf.rs all the details they saw, and say that it was very chaotic watching people drive off the road in order to avoid the aggressive driver who was coming their way.
"I heard that, before he ran into the unfortunate woman and me, he also hit another car, but there were no injuries. The Army van was overtaking a colleague, when this one came driving towards them. Why didn't he stop when he clashed into the first car? It was really scary," said one of the participants in the accident.
"I saw that other drivers were flashing their lights (as a warning), so, thinking there was an accident, I slowed down and turned on all four blinkers. However, there was a slight curve to the right, and the woman who started overtaking my truck could not see the car coming her way. I was moving towards Smederevo when I saw vehicles coming from the opposite direction flashing their lights. I slowed down, however a vehicle behind started to overtake me and avoided a head-on collision by mere centimeters!," he told Telegraf.rs.
The police from Smederevo arrested S.J. (73) from Pozarevac, on suspicion that while driving on the Belgrade-Nis highway in the wrong direction, he caused three traffic accidents between the Pozarevac and Kolari toll booths.
It is suspected that, driving a Suzuki, he first hit a Renault Clio, and then continued.
The driver of a second Renault, seeing that the Suzuki was coming at them tried switching into the middle lane, and then hit a truck, while S.J., it is suspected, continued driving in the overtaking lane, then clashed with a van owned by the Serbian Army, in which seven military personnel on assignment were traveling at the time.
Nobody was injured in the first two accidents, while in the third, one soldier received slightly injured, while S.J. broke his nose.
The prosecutor in Smederevo ordered that the suspect be kept in police custody for up to 48 hours, after which he will be brought before the Prosecutor's Office along with a criminal complaint.
