"Why wasn't station maintenance done for decades?" Minister Vesic resigns, wants those responsible to be named
Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Goran Vesic held an unscheduled press conference late on Monday at the Serbian government, to address the railway station collapse in Novi Sad, and revealed that he would resign today.
Vesic stressed that he wants the responsibility for the tragedy that happened to be determined.
"I call on the competent authorities, above all the prosecutor's office, to determine as soon as possible who is responsible for this terrible accident and who among the designers, contractors, supervisors and investors did not do their work, which caused the death of 14 innocent people. I also expect it to be determined why the Serbian Railways Infrastructure company did not do the maintenance of the station in Novi Sad during the previous years, or decades, which is otherwise their legal obligation.
Precisely because many infrastructural facilities are not maintained, a few weeks ago I submitted an initiative to draft a law on infrastructure maintenance, because that is necessary for this country. I hope that this idea will be implemented by someone who will come after me. I believe that others who were in office in the governments of the Republic of Serbia, and were directly or indirectly in the chain of decision-making in the case of the reconstruction of the station in Novi Sad, will follow my example."
On Friday, November 1, an unprecedented tragedy occurred at the Railway Station in Novi Sad, when a part of the entrance collapsed, killing 14 people. As of Monday evening, three of those injured were still in critical condition.
