Serbia and Guyana establish diplomatic relations

Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric over the weekend in New York signed a joint communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries with Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Guyana Hugh Hilton Todd.

The document was signed on the sidelines of the general debate of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

Djuric's ministry announced that after the signing that he said he was satisfied with the formalization of the decision to establish diplomatic relations.

In a conversation with his Guyanese colleague Djuric stressed Serbia is interested in improving overall bilateral relations and establishing cooperation in all areas of mutual interest.

"Serbia is ready for intensified political dialogue through the establishment of a political consultation mechanism, the implementation of high-level visits, as well as through cooperation within the regional organizations of the Western Hemisphere, in which our country has observer status," Djuric said.

He recalled that former Yugoslavia had good relations with Guyana, Djuric noted that there is a large space for development of political and economic relations, as well as for cooperation in the field of higher education.

Djuric informed his interlocutor about a scholarship program for foreign students, called "The World in Serbia" and expressed his hope that in the coming period we will have the opportunity to host Guyanese students as well.
