Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said today in Brussels that he had a good and open conversation with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi.

According to Vucic, they spoke about Serbia's progress in the process of accession negotiations and he pointed out that Serbia is ready for new steps towards EU membership, as and that he requested a more active involvement of EU institutions in protecting the rights of the Serb people in Kosovo and Metohija.

Vucic stated that they also discussed the implementation of the Reform Agenda and the implementation of the European Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.

"I reiterated that Serbia, essentially and technically, is ready for new steps in the direction of moving closer to membership in the EU, especially when it comes to the rule of law, economic and social integration, and I thanked for the support along the way," wrote Vucic on his Instagram account "buducnostsrbijeav".

Vucic said that he used the opportunity to inform the commissioner about the worrying situation in Kosovo and Metohija and asked for more active involvement of EU institutions in protecting the rights of the Serb people.

"I thanked Commissioner Varhelyi for his personal commitment and contribution to Serbia's European path during his mandate as commissioner for enlargement and wished him success in the new department for which he has been nominated, in the next composition of the European Commission," the president added.

Vucic will today in Brussels participate in a working lunch organized by the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, for the leaders from the Western Balkans.
