Belgrade is officially candidate to host 2028 European Athletics Championships!

European Athletics (EA) today confirmed that Belgrade has officially become a candidate to organize the largest athletics competition on the Old Continent - the European Athletics Championships in 2028!

This news comes as a result of many years of successes and impeccable work of the Athletics Federation of Serbia in organizing international competitions, which earned Serbia huge trust of European Athletics.

"This feat would not have been possible without the enormous backing of the Republic of Serbia and President Aleksandar Vucic, who provided constant support to the development of Serbian athletics during the previous years. His vision and determination for Serbia to host the biggest sporting events played a key role in this process. Without President Vucic and his support, organizing such a large-scale sporting event would not be possible," the Athletics Federation of Serbia announced, adding:

"The competition to host the event is strong, because the Polish city of Silesia, known for its National Athletics Stadium which regularly hosts Diamond League events and which has already hosted the European Team Championship, is the main opponent. Nevertheless, Belgrade is not giving up on its ambitions, given the past successes in organizing top athletic events such as the European Indoor Championships in 2017 and the World Indoor Championships in 2022, as well as the World Cross Country Championships in 2024."

"Our association will now have a series of meetings and visits with representatives of European Athletics, where all the requirements that must be met to organize this sporting spectacle will be discussed in detail.

The greatest challenge will be the construction of the National Athletic Stadium according to the highest European and global standards, which will include all the necessary supporting content needed for top athletic competitions.

This candidacy is a historic chance for Serbian sport to put itself on the map of the biggest athletic events in the world and an opportunity for Belgrade to become the epicenter of European athletics in 2028!," the Athletics Federation of Serbia said.
