Over the period from Friday through Sunday, as many as 13 people lost their lives in 11 traffic accidents in Serbia. A child was among the fatalities.

The analysis of the circumstances behind the accidents revealed that the most common influencing factor is speeding, followed by illegal overtaking and wrong-way driving. Two accidents were caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol.

In the previous period, the traffic police engaged all their capacities both in controlling participants in traffic and in implementing many preventive activities together with other entities, which the public is aware of. Despite this, the past weekend on our roads will go down as a black one. The impression is that as a society we easily overlook the consequences of traffic accidents, which are regularly and in a timely reported to the public, as well as numerous warnings and appeals from the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) and others, the ministry said, adding:

"These circumstances force us to point out to this moment when it is necessary for citizens, participants in traffic, but also all entities involved in this field, to make a joint contribution in order to improve the state of traffic safety on our roads."

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will continue with preventive activities in order to allow the public to learn more about the consequences and the extent of injury and casualties in traffic accidents, in order to get participants in traffic change their attitude and behaviors and take personal accountability for their own and general safety. At the same time, intensive traffic control will continue in order to bring to justice the perpetrators of the most serious traffic violations and other offenses.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Traffic Police Administration will be forced to propose new rigorous solutions in the process of passing the new Law on Road Traffic Safety in order to permanently eliminate negative phenomena and risky behavior on our roads by those participants who persist in committing them while the existing traffic safety system is in place.
