"They'd like a referendum about something else, not about me. They want to replace me, but not through a referendum," Vucic said

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said last night that the next elections will be held in 2027, and that before then the opposition has the opportunity to replace him through an impeachment referendum, but that they do not want to go to that vote.

Vucic, while touring construction works on the children's hospital Tirsova 2, said that the opposition is exaggerating the actual number of people present at the protests against lithium mining in Serbia, stressing that he believes that the gatherings are being organized.

"For me, rallies are those that happen through the collection of ballots, when they are counted by electoral committees. (Parliamentary) elections are over, (presidential) elections will be held again in 2027, and before that I am giving them the opportunity to replace me - we will help them in that matter and it is possible to implement it in line with the law," said Vucic.

Asked by a journalist if anyone from the opposition responded to his suggestion to collect signatures of 70 deputies and that the Serbian Progressive Party would collect the rest for them, up to the number needed to request a referendum, Vucic said that they replied they "do not want that vote."

"They'd like a referendum about something else, not about me. They want to replace me, but not through a referendum," Vucic said.

Speaking about the opposition's announcements that large protests and a "new October 5" are expected in September, Vucic said that there will be many important events in September, from large investments to important visits.

"Those of us who have work to do, we will deal with that work. Let them organize whatever they want and however they want to, that's all fine as long as they don't break the law," said Vucic.
