This is why there is so much police on Belgrade streets: Red security alert most likely until Tuesday

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has said that the red security alert that was declared on Saturday, June 29, due to a terrorist attack in front of the Embassy of Israel in Belgrade will most likely be in effect until Tuesday.

It is precisely for this reason that a larger number of police are noticeable on the streets of Belgrade and other cities.

"I think we will resolve everything by Tuesday and everything will be alright by then," Vucic told TV Prva.

He gave additional details about the attack on the Israeli embassy and security assigned to it, saying that the attacker was extremely well trained and fired the arrow (that hit a Serbian policeman in the neck) while holding a crossbow inside his bag, so that the attack was completely unexpected.

Vucic stressed that there is "good cooperation with Islamic communities in Serbia," that the authorities know which schools want to spread their influence, and that Serbia is fighting against radical extremism.

He pointed out that policeman (Gendarmerie member) Milos Jevremovic deserves admiration for his composure when the attacker - who was shot and killed during the incident - wounded him.

"This is a completely premeditated attack, that precision. But on the other hand, the discipline of gendarme Jevremovic. To force yourself to wait for the police to arrive with an arrow stuck in your neck. He saved himself, but also, himself for the state. He will soon be back to work and will be decorated," said Vucic.

Vucic added that citizens of Serbia do not need to worry about security.

"According to all statistics, Serbia is among the safest countries in Europe and the world, and Belgrade is among the safest cities. Citizens can rest easy, Serbia is strong enough to fight terrorism," says Vucic.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on Saturday that a "code red terrorism security threat alert" had been declared in Serbia, and on Sunday pointed out that "terrorism cannot defeat the state."

Dacic explained that because of the increased level of security threats, citizens will see more police on the streets, and that the attack on the gendarme is now officially being treated as a terrorist attack.
