Bear tracks in the mud were photographed on a peak onthe Cemernik Mountain, which stretches from the Vlasina Mountain to the Grdelica Gorge. The photos were posted on Facebook by Novica Stankovic, a ranger on Vlasina.
What confused the followers of this page is that in addition to the bear tracks, the remains of the skeleton of a cow can also be seen. It all leads to the conclusion that maybe the beast, in this case a brown bear, killed and ate the cow, but there is no scientific basis for such a thing.
"The bears that live in southern Serbia are herbivores and mainly feed on plants, until the moment they smell blood. Then they become carnivores. There is no way that a bear attacked and ate a cow in this case. The skeleton was there by accident," believes Nenad Mitrovic, a veterinarian from Vladicin Han.
Bears have been seen in recent years in the south of Serbia on the Kukavica Mountain, but now they have also been spotted on mountains on the right side of the South (Juzna) Morava River.
The bear is a protected species in Serbia and bear hunting is illegal.
