Vucic: It's important to remember why EU was created, we remain on EU path
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has said that it is important to remember the reasons why the EU was created and the basis on which it was created and what unites us, and reminded that the European path is Serbia's strategic decision.
Last night, at the formal reception on the occasion of Europe Day which was organized in the Botanical Garden by the head of the Delegation to the European Union in Serbia, Emanuele Giaufret, Vucic said that the EU is the biggest peace project in the history of the continent, and that for Serbia that is one of the most important things - preserving peace, lives, and paving the way for the life and future for young people.
"I thank our partners for the help through investments, the EU is the biggest investor, from solidarity funds and others, whenever the citizens of Serbia were threatened by floods and beyond. That is not a small amount of money to us. Without the EU, there wouldn't be infrastructure, high-speed rail, school, educational, scientific projects. And for that I express my immense gratitude to the countries and people in the EU who helped Serbia," said Vucic.
On behalf of himself and the citizens of Serbia, he congratulated Europe Day to everyone, as well as those citizens of Serbia who want to be part of Europe.
"Even if we are not as good as you would like, nor as submissive, which would perhaps be better for us, I believe that, you more so, we less, could not put pride and arrogance aside and talk about the future," said Vucic.
He stressed that it is important that we implement reforms, not lag behind the EU in many areas, but that there is still a lot to do.
"We think we belong in Europe and we will be on the European path, that is our strategic and permanent position that we will not change," said Vucic.
He added that this is sometimes less and sometimes more popular, but that it will not change.
Vucic said that, in accordance with that message, he hopes that we will have more good messages from Brussels in the coming period, primarily regarding the opening of further clusters, further progress of Serbia on the European path.
"And we will have to make an effort to fulfill important conditions, reform conditions, in terms of the rule of law, freedom of the media. I think it's important that we continue with our reforms and fulfill what you call conditions, and I am sure that the government of Milos Vucevic will invest enormous energy in fulfilling those tasks. And thank you for caring about Serbia, for respecting Serbia," said Vucic.
He stressed that Serbia has great respect for the EU and that we want to move closer to it as soon as possible.
"We will continue to work. And to you personally, dear Emanuele, thank you very much for your commitment, thank you very much for your hard work, thank you very much for sometimes understanding our capriciousness and thank you for standing up so uncompromisingly for a better position for Serbia," Vucic said.
