Sremska Mitrovica doctor arrested after 44-year-old mother of two dies shortly after being told to go home
N.R., a doctor in the town of Sremska Mitrovica, has been arrested on suspicion of committing a serious crime against people's health, the Interior Ministry, MUP, confirmed for Telegraf.rs today.
He is suspected of examining and then discharging a patient, who died soon after.
The woman, 44-year-old Natasa Zabic, was the mother of two young children.
She passed away last Thursday from pulmonary embolism, most likely caused by a blood clot that started in a swollen leg because of which she went to the doctor.
After examining her and prescribing medication, the doctor decided to discharge the patient to continue treatment at home. However, not long after, she passed away.
Natasa Zabic was previously admitted to the hospital on March 31 with appendicitis, after which she underwent surgery and was discharged. But she returned to the hospital again on April 25 with a swollen leg.
Natasa's brother Sasa Djekic claimed in a statement he gave the daily Novosti that the doctor's incompetence caused his sister's death, a great tragedy that befell the family. On Sunday, family and friends laid the unfortunate woman to rest, with the hope that justice will prevail.
A few hours before the funeral, Sasa was barely able to talk about what had happened.
"On Friday, April 26, my sister was urgently referred by the Health Center to the hospital, because of the swelling in her leg, thrombosis had developed. She went and was examined there by a general surgery specialist, who told her that since she was able to stand on her leg, there was nothing wrong with her. He simply sent her home," Sasa told the press.
