Well known seismologist on Montenegro quake: Land and sea have been shaking for weeks. I only hope one thing

In the early hours of this morning Montenegro was hit by a strong earthquake, which was felt throughout Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Seismologist Kresimir Kuk told Croatian Radio that the calculated magnitude was 5.4, but that this was not the first earthquake of that series.

"In recent weeks, there has been pronounced seismic activity in that area. For several weeks now there has been great activity in the area of the southern coast, both under the sea and on land. Most of these earthquakes occurred on land, but we are talking about an epicenter area which definitely got strongly activated," Kuk said.

Not long after the first time the ground shook this morning, another, somewhat weaker, M3.4 earthquake followed, with the epicenter not far from the first one. A series of at least 30 aftershocks then happened.

Both earthquakes occurred in the area of the municipality of Niksic, northern Montenegro, specifically the village of Donje Caradje, while the closest town to the epicenter is Gacko, where there was material damage as well.

"Citizens in the south (of Croatia) are currently experiencing a series of earthquakes, of which today's was the strongest. We need to be vigilant, monitor what will happen next, but we hope that this is the strongest earthquake of this series," Kuk told HRT.
