Longest building in Serbia stretches for almost a kilometer: 2 Crna Trava municipalities could fit into it
The longest building in Belgrade, better known as "Zmijica" ("The Little Snake" in Serbian), "The Chinese Wall" and "The Meander" - officially "B-7" - is located in Block 21 in New Belgrade, and is made up of 9 segments built in a zigzag pattern.
And it goes on and on, for almost one kilometer!
A Telegraf crew visited this "edifice" and talked to the residents. And there are many of them - an entire small town.
"This is the longest building in the Balkans. It's amazing that no one has come to film it before. It should be protected as a monument of the Republic of Serbia," one resident told us.
The building has as many as 62 entrances and 798 apartments. If it were taller than 4 floors, it would be a true beehive.
When residents first settled in, there were about 3,500 of them. For example, the entire municipality of Crna Trava in southern Serbia has half as many.
Should a residents' assembly be convened, these neighbors would have to rent the Belgrade Arena or, at least, the Ranko Zeravica Sports Hall!
And the building is in dire need of new investments. It was constructed as the last "planned building" in, at the time, new Block 21, between 1960 and 1966. It is known that the construction solutions were at a high level for the era, but still, the ravages of time did not leave "Zmijica" unscathed.
"This building has its problems. The facade is falling off, there is damage, and there are schools nearby, this can be unsafe for passers-by," a resident said.
These, as well as many other problems, are not unexpected for a structure that has been here for more than half a century. The roof also needs repairs.
"It is old and not well maintained. The roofs are old and leak water into top floor apartments," the man added.
People living here point out that the biggest obstacle to repairing the building is discord. The inability agree on what to do leaves the residents in a position where they must finance, on their own, the repair works meant to fix the damage that poses a threat to parts of the structure.
