Minister of Health Danica Grujicic said today that the start of vaccination of mothers against whooping cough is being considered so that the newborns are protected in the first months of life.

Regarding the recent deaths of babies as a result of whooping cough, the minister said that the issue is being seriously considered, and that it is up to the State Expert Commission for Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases to make a decision.

Speaking for TV Pink she stressed whooping cough is especially dangerous for newborns.

"In some areas, the problem is that vaccination is not done on time. In small towns, the vaccination rate for children is 98 percent, as people are looking up to pediatricians and trust them," said Grujicic, adding that in large towns, the vaccination rate is lower.

She added that it is necessary to restore trust in medicine and doctors, and that vaccinating children is "the only right thing" that impacts the health of other children in their surroundings.
