Bulgaria abolishes fees on transit of Russian gas going to Serbia and Hungary

The Bulgarian government will stop charging fees on the transit of Russian gas passing through that country on its way to Serbia and Hungary, the Ministry of Mining and Energy told Tanjug.

These are the fees that have been in effect since mid-October, and Serbia and Hungary, which receive gas through the transit gas pipeline from Bulgaria, have condemned this move, fearing that consumers will pay because of such additional costs.

Serbia and Hungary have officially addressed the European Commission regarding Bulgaria's fees. Hungary is a member of the EU and believes that the decision to introduce the fees was against EU rules, Serbian Minister of Energy Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic said earlier, and pointed out that there had been examples in the past of decisions of this kind being reverted.

"Serbia has officially addressed the Energy Community, in which the European Commission also participates. We want to make sure that there are no violations of European regulations. We will try to overcome this challenge in conversation with the Bulgarian side, which would certainly have negative financial consequences for Serbia and Hungary," Djedovic Handanovic said earlier.
