Main shock still ahead: Seismologist tells Telegraf about this morning's earthquake, strength next could reach
A 4.1 magnitude earthquake hit Petrovac na Mlava this morning at 4:45, and the tremor was felt as far as Belgrade. However, as seismologist Slavica Radovanovic tells Telegraf.rs, it is expected that an even stronger shock will occur there in the future.
She explains that the fault that runs from Veliko Gradiste to Svilajnec has the capacity to generate magnitude 5 earthquakes.
"There were several earthquakes, but bearing in mind that there were earthquakes on the northern part of the fault that goes from Veliko Gradiste via Petrovac na Mlava to Svilajnec, and that this fault has the capacity to generate earthquakes of 5 degrees magnitude. There have been no such earthquakes there for over 30 years, since 1991.
Last year I said that it is possible for earthquakes to occur there. When the Seismological Survey of Serbia analyzes the data, then we will know whether this is regular seismic activity or whether one of the transverse faults has been activated, so an earthquake is yet to occur on the main one," explains our interlocutor.
She added that this was already the 7th earthquake in a row (in recent days), and that the main shock will come in the future.
"This is already the 7th earthquake in that area, it's all the same fault. Seismic activity is slowly rising there, and the main shock will be in the future, we don't know when," she says.
Two earthquakes, one of which measured 4.1 on the Richter scale, hit Petrovac na Mlavi early this morning. The epicenter was again in Covdin, just like last weekend.
The first earthquake occurred at 4:45 am, with a magnitude of 4.1, at a depth of 1 kilometer. The second happened at 5:03. It was at a depth of 7 kilometers and had a magnitude of 2.4.
The earthquake was felt from Covdin, through the surrounding villages, all the way to Belgrade, where it woke people up from their sleep.
