Horror near Velika Plana: Train collides with car, driver killed

In an accident that happened this morning at a level crossing on a railroad between Velika Plana and Markovac, the driver of a car was killed when a passenger train collided with it, the company Railway Infrastructure of Serbia has announced, and this has been confirmed for Telegraf by the Interior Ministry, MUP.

The statement said that members of the MUP, the Medical Emergency Services, as well as representatives of the Railway Commission for Extraordinary Events are at the scene of the accident and that railway traffic on this part of the Nis railway was suspended this morning.

It is added that according to information from the scene, the accident occurred when the driver tried to bypass the lowered barrier and cross the railway, even though that is illegal.

The Railway Infrastructure said that there were no other passengers in the vehicle except the driver, that the accident occurred at 8:55 am and that the crossing was secured by an automatic barrier that was working properly at the time of the accident, when it was lowered to block passage of vehicles.

This company appeals on drivers to observe the regulations and traffic signals at level crossings and not to try crossing the tracks when the barriers are down.
