Coca-Cola reacts to poisoning caused by Romerquelle soda: "It is an isolated case"

Posts about alleged poisonings in Rijeka cafes spread today on social networks in Croatia, and the police confirmed that one person has been taken ill while consuming a non-alcoholic, carbonated drink and that they were hospitalized as the doctors suspect a chemical injury to the esophagus.

As reported by Index.hr, numerous posts circulated on social networks stating that several people had recently been seriously poisoned by this brand of (flavored) mineral water. The Coca-Cola company was also mentioned in those posts, which confirmed for a Croatian newspaper that one case was connected to the beverage they produce.

"We are aware of an isolated case related to one glass bottle of Romerquelle Emotion Blueberry Pomegranate 330ml. We express our deep concern and hope for a speedy and full recovery of the person involved in this case. We are fully open to cooperation with all competent bodies," the company's official statement reads.

Earlier, the Clinical Center (KBC) in Rijeka also confirmed that a person with a chemical injury to the esophagus had been admitted, but did not specify the cause of the injury.

"Their medical condition is currently stable, and indicated diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are continuing. Immediately after they were admitted and before they got hospitalized, a report was submitted to the competent investigative bodies of the Primorje-Goranska police, which you can contact regarding possible additional information," the director of KBC Rijeka has stated, reports Vecernji List.

The police confirmed for Index.hr that no other similar events had been reported.
