Vucic: I will seek permanent driving ban for anyone who causes injury or death of child

President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic has received representatives of the Association of Parents of Child Victims of Traffic Accidents. On that occasion, the president specifically stated that he will request that new legislation provides for a permanent ban on driving a vehicle for those who commit a criminal offense against traffic safety which results in the injury or death of a child.

President Vucic expressed his wish to, within his competences, help the parents who came to the meeting with various initiatives related to traffic safety.

During the meeting, the members of the association presented proposals concerning a stricter penal policy, which is the subject of the Criminal Code.

Considering the consequences of the tragedies, the parents of the children also initiated the setting up of permanent help of psychologists within the healthcare system of the Republic of Serbia.

After carefully listening to their proposals, President Vucic accepted this initiative and pointed out that he would ask the new parliamentary majority to amend the Criminal Code by which the punishment for offenses against traffic safety resulting in the death of a child or more persons would be tightened from the current two to 12 years, to five to 20 years.

In addition, President Vucic particularly stressed that he will request that the legislation provides for a permanent ban on driving a vehicle for those who commit a criminal offense against traffic safety, which results in the injury or death of a child.

Recalling that the National Strategy for Traffic Safety 2023-2030 was adopted in September 2023, which aims to completely prevent children from being injured in traffic accidents, further work on the prevention of illegal driving and close coordination with the Ministries of Traffic and the Interior was agreed during the meeting, announced the presidential press service.
