Phenomenal news: Athletics Federation of Serbia announces Belgrade's European Outdoor Championships candidacy
Our capital could host another huge athletics event, after the World Indoor Championships
"Is this the best year for Serbian athletics?" is the question that opened a meeting of the professional council of the Athletics Federation of Serbia (SAS) on September 21.
A large number of medals have been won at international competitions for all age categories throughout this year, and Ivana Vuleta put the cherry on top of all the successes of Serbian athletics by winning the first gold medal at this year's outdoor World Championships, and thereby completing a fantastic streak.
During the indoor and outdoor seasons, counting all medals from international competitions, Serbian track-and-field athletes won as many as 44.
Also, this year, SAS had the largest number of participants in said competitions, which indicates that there is not only the quality of the results, but also the quantity, which reflects a professional strategic approach to the development of athletics in Serbia.
In addition to the medals won, the Athletics Federation of Serbia also successfully organized local competitions where athletes from Serbia broke their seasonal and personal records, set new standards and collected points.
During the year, nine lectures were given by top sports experts from Serbia, and several more by Laurent Meuwly, the best European coach for sprint/hurdles and relays.
This year, SAS also implemented two projects in cooperation with the Olympic Committee of Serbia.
"During the session, the Expert Council came to the conclusion that the year 2023 was the most successful of all seasons in the 75-year history of the Athletic Federation and supported the idea of President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic to build a national athletics stadium in the coming years in the territory of Belgrade, and also for the Athletics Federation of Serbia to submit a candidacy to host the European Outdoor Championships, which would be held in 2030 at the national stadium," it has been announced.
"In the coming period, we expect more lectures to be given by domestic and foreign experts, to hold Athletics Days, prepare for the next season and further development of Serbian athletics," the Council concluded.
