The death of a 1.5-year-old boy B.K., originally from Serbia, who died in the city of Portogruaro in Italy on Monday evening, is still a mystery. His mother found him in the street with a head injury, and he died shortly after at the hospital.

Investigators have ruled out homicide and believe it was an accident. However, there are no witnesses to the tragedy, which is why the police are investigating the cars that usually pass on the street in front of the house. The street is not very busy as it is a dead end.

The Carabinieri are investigating the case after medical examiner Antonello Cirnelli said the child's head was likely crushed by a wheel.

However, the boy's family, originally from Serbia, said that it was an accident.

His grandmother and uncle said that the little boy fell from the hood of a car as he was playing, but the investigators consider this version unlikely, according to Italian media.

What is certain for now is that the mother arrived at the hospital in Portogruaro on Monday at 18.45 with her dying son in her arms: she was screaming and asking for help.

The boy had a wound on his head, and investigators are looking into the possibility that the toddler was not properly watched by an adult and was hit by a car.

The boy's father, Senat K., was not at home at the time of the tragedy.

An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death.
