Djokovic to lead the Serbian national team in the Davis Cup tie against Spain
Playing in the Davis Cup this year is a requirement to qualify for next year's Olympic Games
There is exactly one month left until the Serbia faces Spain in Valencia in the group stage of the Davis Cup World Group 2023. In the meantime, the Serbia head coach, Viktor Troicki, decided to shorten the extensive list of players he is counting on for that tie.
The group stage of the final tournament of the Davis Cup World Group is scheduled to last from September 12 to 17, in the four host cities (Bologna, Manchester, Valencia and Split).
Serbia's Davis Cup team has been drawn to Group C hosted by Valencia (Spain), which also includes Spain, South Korea and the Czech Republic.
The shortlists, but not the final ones, with the names of the players on whom the head coaches are counting for the upcoming matches of the group stage of the Davis Cup tournament arrived to the International Tennis Federation (ITF) today.
Serbia's Davis Cup shortlist includes: Novak Djokovic (ranked No. 2 in the world), Laslo Djere (34), Miomir Kecmanovic (41), Dusan Lajovic (66) and Hamad Medjedovic (144), with the possibility of replacing three players before the start of the competition.
Serbia will first play against South Korea on September 12, followed by Spain on September 15 and finally the Czech Republic on September 16. The final tournament, that will have eight teams from the group stages, will be held in Malaga November 21-26.
Novak Djokovic will almost certainly play the Davis Cup, because in order to qualify for Olympic Games next year, he must compete in this tournament.
