Large number of police officers guarding AEK footballers in Zagreb
The footballers of the Greek AEK arrived in Zagreb today, where they will on Tuesday play the first match of the third round of Champions League qualifiers against the local team, Dinamo, Croatian media outlets are reporting.
The Croatian police increased security measures at the airport and on the way to the hotel where the football players and the coaching staff of the Greek champions are staying. The website Index writes that the bus with the AEK players and staff was heavily guarded by the police on the way from the airport to the hotel.
Also, numerous police officers have been deployed around the hotel where the Greek champions are staying.
The Croatian police has declared the match between Dinamo and AEK a high-risk one. UEFA announced earlier that there will be no traveling fans at the matches played between the two clubs.
AEK fan Michalis Katsouris was murdered in the night between last Monday and Tuesday in Athens during the clashes with Dinamo supporters, while eight people were injured. Visiting Croatian fans attacked the supporters of the home team before the game, which was supposed to be played last week in Athens.
But UEFA canceled it the same day, last Tuesday, and decided that the first match of the third round of CL qualifiers will be played this Tuesday in Zagreb, while the second leg is scheduled for August 19 in the capital of Greece.
