Woman in critical condition after contracting West Nile virus

A woman (73) is hospitalized in serious condition with West Nile virus.

The woman is treated at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Clinical Center in Nis due to serious general condition caused by West Nile virus, the health facility confirmed for Telegraf.rs today.

According to the doctors, the woman has "a serious form of illness with inflammation of the meninges."

"Because of the existing lung disease, and due to her serious general condition, the patient is on assisted ventilation," they said at the University Clinical Center Nis.

The presence of West Nile virus, they added, was confirmed in a competent laboratory in Belgrade.

The clinic also said that patients who infected with West Nile virus are not a risk to their environment, i.e. they are not contagious because the virus is not transmitted from person to person.
