Son of former President Milutinovic at his commemoration: "My father loved Serbia very much"
Veljko Milutinovic, the son of former president of Serbia Milan Milutinovic, said at the commemoration for his father today that he loved Serbia very much and that he over the decades shared with it many happy and sad moments.
"This speech was his wish and even a year or two before his death he prepared his, more than extensive biography, so that I wouldn't make any mistakes. I did as he wished as far as the speech was concerned, but not regarding the biography, wchich you already heard from people who understand his character and work, President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic, from (Foreign) Minister Ivica Dacic. His biography is well-known," Veljko Milutinovic told the gathering at the Serbian National Assembly.
He said that his father was the first to teach him about telling the truth when talking about things that we know personally, to which we can testify, but not about something that we only heard about or that we were told was a particular way.
"I can't testify to what he was like as a party comrade or leader, but I can testify to what he was like as a father and a man. He was not a man who liked eulogies, awards, medals and similar things. Everything he did, he did out of conviction or because he thought it was necessary," said Milutinovic.
He added that his father did not expect either recognition or praise, although he got them during his lifetime.
"And it seems to me that he holds on to them after his death," added Milutinovic.
According to him, the former president of Serbia liked to help other people, and did not turn his back on injustice and poverty, adding that in this sense he was a true socialist.
"My father loved Serbia very much, he shared many happy and sad moments with it over many decades, remember how happy he was when we won the basketball trophy in Athens, and unfortunately, there were way too many sad moments, too," he said.
Veljko Milutinovic stressed that his father was a good, benevolent man.
"My father didn't only love Serbia, he loved my mother very much and we loved him very much, he was a good and benevolent man, he also had an unbreakable power of will that would sometimes drive us crazy, but he always did what was right and often maybe, what others could not do," concluded Veljko Milutinovic.
