Minister of Internal Affairs Bratislav Gasic said today that 68,000 pieces of ordnance and weapons have been handed over so far and that the campaign of collecting weapons from citizens is going very well.

"The campaign is going extraordinarily well, I thank the citizens of Serbia for understanding the state leadership and the desire of all of us for the safety of citizens to be at a much higher level, that every bullet that is handed in potentially saves a life," Gasic told Tanjug during a tour of new and reconstructed facilities of the MUP (Interior Ministry) in Belgrade.

He stressed that it is yet to be decided whether the campaign will be extended.

"In agreement with President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic and the Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, we will see if we will extend the campaign, because the continuity of the handing in (of weapons) is constant and equal," he added.

Until June 8 a campaign to legalize weapons is ongoing in Serbia, which was launched after two mass murders - in a school in Belgrade and in the vicinity of the capital's suburban municipality of Mladenovac - both committed in early May.

According to the MUP, citizens can hand in their weapons without any consequences.
