Isabella Rossellini to perform in Belgrade's Yugoslav Drama Theater on May 21
Actress Isabella Rossellini will perform her one woman show "Darwin's Smile" at the Yugoslav Drama Theater (Jugoslovensko Dramsko Pozoriste) on May 21, at the invitation of the Belgrade Dance Festival, organizers announced today.
The play is performed in English with Serbian subtitles, and is a kind of a lesson on evolution and acting. Rossellini investigates how empathy, which is also the basis of acting, is necessary for studying animal behavior, a press release stated.
"Darwin's Smile" offers a reconciliation between two worlds that are often at opposite ends - between art and science, organizers say, adding that by reading Charles Darwin's book "The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals", Rossellini found that the continuity of human and animal relationships can be discovered also through the expression of emotions.
The Italian-American actress, known for films such as "Blue Velvet" and "Death Becomes Her," by using relatively simple theatrical means and her recognizable optimism, turns the stage into a farm, raising some of the most important issues regarding conservation of animal species and the planet.
The guest appearance by Rossellini, the daughter of famous actress Ingrid Bergman and director Robert Rossellini, is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Serbia, the Italian Institute of Culture, and others, while a part of the proceeds will go to the Beta Association from the town of Zajecar in eastern Serbia, which cares for and treats abandoned dogs and cats.
