Interior Ministry warns before upcoming holiday: Last year, 7 people died in traffic accidents during May Day
"On the occasion of the upcoming May Day holiday (Labor Day in Serbia), during which increased intensity of traffic is expected on the roads in Serbia, the Ministry of Internal Affairs appeals on participants in traffic plan their journey, leave on time, drive carefully and follow the rules in order to reach their destination safely," Traffic Police Directorate officer Dejan Stevic said today.
Stevic warned that last year, during the May Day holiday, seven people unfortunately lost their lives on our roads, while 164 were injured.
In the same period, he pointed out, 28 drivers were prosecuted for violent driving, 18 for driving under the influence of psychoactive substances, while 892 drivers were sanctioned for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Stevic added that last year during the May Day holiday, two motorcycle drivers were also killed.
"We appeal on drivers of two-wheelers and cyclists to use protective equipment, not consume alcohol before driving, reduce speed and participate in traffic with increased attention. By speeding, you risk your life and the lives of others," said Stevic.
He stressed that the Traffic Police Directorate, together with all members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will work in a dedicated manner during the holiday to preserve safety and called on citizens to help the police with their responsible behavior.
"The Ministry of Internal Affairs wishes you a safe and happy upcoming holiday," said Stevic.
