They did what no one ever did: Nis doctors worked every day to eliminate wait lists, and have just succeeded!
After almost 100 days of work and 12 consecutive working weekends when the staff worked without financial compensation, the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery in Nis achieved its goal - the waiting lists have been eliminated and turned into appointment lists - the director of the Clinic for Cardiac Surgery in Nis Dr. Dragan Milic wrote on his Twitter account.
"After almost 100 days of work and 12 consecutive working weekends, the goal set by our Clinic for Cardiac Surgery of the University Hospital of Nis to eliminate all waiting lists for cardiovascular operations has been achieved! As of today, there are no waiting lists at our clinic, and no patient approved by anesthesiology will wait for surgery for more than 5 to15 days! Starting tomorrow, the clinic will return to its regular operating mode...
The waiting list with 149 patients at the beginning of this year has turned into an appointment list that now has 42 patients! Operations that were last year waited for 3-4 and sometimes even 6 months will no longer be waited for...
Pacijenti vise nece cekati operaciju 4-6meseci vec 7-15dana! pic.twitter.com/Gww4yyUSxj— Dragan Milic (@drdraganmilic) April 9, 2023
In these 100 days, a total of 248 operations have been performed, and last year in the same period of time 117. Only in March of this year, an incredible 98 surgeries were done!!! The number of hospitalized patients in the first 3 months of last year was 145, and this year as many as 353!
The number of outpatient examinations for the period January-March this year was 3,014, and last year 1,467.
So, compared to last year, the number of operations, the number of examinations and the number of hospitalizations doubled.... Only the death rate remained the same - below 2% (1.98%) including emergency cases. None of the patients who were operated on during the weekend died (there was suspicion that concentration falls on weekends and therefore the quality of work decreases)... This assumption did not turn out to be correct...
And all these results in these 100 days were achieved by the same team of people with the same or even a slightly smaller number compared to last year, and that says everything about the increased volume of work we had... Unfortunately, the number of hygienists and paramedics has been reduced compared to last year, which can potentially seriously jeopardize the results of our work and the fact that our clinic has almost no postoperative infections... The number of anesthetists has also decreased...
I am PROUD of the entire staff of the clinic who persevered and in a dedicated manner endured this extremely high pace of work and fulfilled the promise made to eliminate waiting lists. Since the work on weekends was not paid, they proved that there are more important things than money - and that is caring for the patient. Care for those people we live with, who we may meet in the city and are not even aware that they need help.... I THANK the authorities for providing us with enough materials to achieve this goal, even though we never received official approval for this additional work...
We hope that the clinic will be taken care of with the acquisition of equipment that has not been renewed for 15 years, and here we are primarily thinking about the ECG machine (we only have one) and monitors for invasive monitoring. We also hope to hire new staff in order to expand the number and type of services in the normal capacity. The citizens of Nis and southern Serbia, as well as the staff of our clinic, deserve it.... The establishment of the Institute, which the citizens of Nis have been waiting for for more than 50 years, would certainly provide even better healthcare service....
I am HAPPY that our patients got a new chance to enjoy life with their loved ones... And of course, if in the future there is a greater influx of patients who cannot all be operated on workdays, we will work again on weekends without financial compensation so that they too will receive appropriate and timely surgery...
It must be pointed out that the doctors in Nis have achieved what no one else in Serbia has, just thanks to their own will."
Dr. Milic wrote just seven days ago that they were not far from the goal.
"Last year in the period January-March, 107 operations were done, and this year 223, which is an increase of more than 100 percent! Our clinic is no longer far from the set goal - the elimination of all waiting lists for cardiovascular operations," Professor Milic wrote at the time.
