Electricity price to go up 8 percent in Serbia on May 1, gas price to increase by 10 percent
From May 1, the price of electricity will increase by 8 percent, and of gas by 10 percent, and the Ministry of Mining and Energy said that, despite pressure, they fought for the lowest possible correction of the prices of these energy products, which is part of the current stand-by arrangement with the International Monetary Fund.
Earlier, the Energy Agency of Serbia gave consent for the increase in the prices of these energy products, so that the price of gas with taxes will be 4.55 dinars per kilowatt hour, and the price of electricity 13.31 dinars.
The Ministry stressed that the average electricity bill will increase by about 250 dinars, and that even after this price hike, prices of electricity and gas for households in Serbia will still remain among the lowest in Europe.
"Prices will remain among the lowest in Europe primarily due to state subsidies, because we want to ensure uninterrupted supply, while preserving citizens' standard of living as much as possible. It is the citizens, and the most vulnerable, that are still the priority of the Government of Serbia," the Ministry said.
They add that 4 billion dinars have been set aside in the budget to help socially vulnerable consumers.
The Ministry appeals on local governments to help everyone who has the right to the status of an energy vulnerable customer to apply, in order to achieve significant reductions in their bills.
They also said that the state will continue to subsidize improvement of energy efficiency throughout the country and that a new public call will be issued soon.
