These are the Croats arrested at Serbian border while transporting radioactive lightning rod
Three Zagreb residents, who were arrested on the Serbian side of the Bezdan border crossing on Saturday, were returning from visiting a friend in Backa Topola, from whom they took the radioactive head of a lightning rod.
When detection devices at the border crossing started reading a high level of radiation, panic arose among the customs officers and policemen, but not among the drivers and passengers of an Audi with German license plates, whose spare wheel was the source of the radiation.
During the exit control of the car, the radioactivity detector alarm sounded, which is why a detailed control was urgently carried out, with all the necessary safety and protection measures in place.
Then, in the trunk, in the space for the spare wheel, an undeclared metal head of the lightning rod and a device for measuring the system of metals to which the hand-held detector for measuring ionizing radiation reacted were found, the Customs Administration of the Republic of Serbia stated.
As reported by Croatia's Jutarnji List, Lajos M. (48), Danijel T. (36) and Aleksandar T. (40) were arrested and the proceedings against them are now being conducted by the Basic Public Prosecutor's Office in Sombor, Serbia.
All three said during the first questioning that they left Backa Topola for Zagreb, but did not say what they intended with the radioactive lightning rod head. At that time, they presented their defense, and in the meantime, their friend from Backa Topola was also reported - the one from whom they took over the radioactive item.
The prosecutor's office in Sombor has put the three in 30-day detention.
They are charged with possessing and bringing in radioactive or other dangerous items, and have been detained as flight risk. If found guilty, the criminal offense of which they are suspected carries a prison sentence of three to ten years.
