Children from four families in Novi Pazar have tested positive for tuberculosis - eight students from two elementary schools and one child of preschool age, RTS learned from the Public Health Institute in Novi Pazar.
Seven children were infected in two families.
Epidemiologist of the Public Health Institute of Novi Pazar Safet Ganic told Tanjug that the health condition of the nine children from that city who were diagnosed with tuberculosis is stable and without complications, because they were all vaccinated at birth and receive regular therapy.
He stated that the testing of children will continue in order to determine if there are any more patients.
"So far, two classes in one school have been tested. Among them, two children are suspected of having tuberculosis, they have been given therapy. Another class in that school is being tested, the results will be known by the end of the week. All teachers have been tested and all are negative. The testing of children from other schools should begin next week," Ganic said.
According to the Institute, new tuberculosis infections were caused through direct contact.
"The symptoms are typical. According to the doctors in charge, they included fever, weight loss, cough, flu symptoms that lasted more than 15 days. In the children who were detected by subsequent testing, the symptoms were harmless, almost none," Ganic explained.
Director of the Institute of Public Health Batut Verica Jovanovic told RTS that the state of tuberculosis infection in Novi Pazar is being monitored and that all potential risks are being investigated.
"We are talking about two family epidemics and all potential risks that can be found in those families are being investigated. Those children are well and their condition is being monitored," said Verica Jovanovic.
